There comes a point where a franchise stops asking permission to be great.
Dragon Ball reached that point a long time ago.
After decades of unforgettable manga chapters, iconic anime moments, beloved video games, and millions of fans around the world, Dragon Ball no longer needs to prove that it belongs. It simply needs to celebrate what it has become.
That’s exactly what Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO feels like. Not another reinvention. Not another experiment. A celebration.
A celebration of forty years of adventure, rivalry, friendship, and the fans who have been there through it all.
Ask most Dragon Ball fans what they know about Sparking! ZERO and you’ll probably hear the same answers.
- The massive roster.
- The explosive battles.
- The incredible visuals.
- The transformations.
- The “what if” scenarios.
On the surface, it’s exactly what fans hoped for—a modern successor to the Budokai Tenkaichi series. But that’s only part of the story.
Sparking! ZERO isn’t remarkable because it has more characters than almost any Dragon Ball game before it. It’s remarkable because it finally feels like Dragon Ball gaming has reached full maturity.
The developers aren’t searching for an identity anymore. They already found it. Now they’re simply inviting everyone to celebrate.
Sparking! ZERO isn’t the future because it changes Dragon Ball. It’s the future because it celebrates everything Dragon Ball has already become.
DEEP DIVE
Mechanics — A Toy Box Without Limits
Earlier Dragon Ball games often had to make compromises. Limited rosters. Limited arenas. Limited mechanics. Sparking! ZERO feels like those limitations have finally disappeared.
The combat is fast. The environments are destructible. Transformations happen seamlessly. Signature attacks feel every bit as devastating as they do in the anime.
Most importantly, the game embraces something Dragon Ball has always done well: Chaos.
- Massive energy blasts.
- Explosive clashes.
- Impossible battles.
The game doesn’t try to make Dragon Ball smaller or more grounded. It leans into everything that makes the series larger than life.
The Roster — Forty Years of Dragon Ball

Perhaps the game’s greatest achievement isn’t its combat. It’s its confidence.
Original Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball GT. The movies. Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball Daima. Heroes. Villains. Different forms. Different generations. Rather than choosing one era over another, Sparking! ZERO celebrates all of them.
Every fan can find the version of Dragon Ball that made them fall in love with the series.
Whether you grew up with Kid Goku, Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, Ultra Instinct Goku, or Daima’s newest adventures, the game quietly says the same thing: You belong here.
What-If Battles — The Conversations We’ve Always Had
Every Dragon Ball fan has asked the question. What if Vegeta defeated Frieza? What if Bardock survived? What if Gohan reached his full potential sooner? What if two characters from completely different eras crossed paths?
For decades, those conversations happened on playgrounds, internet forums, and around living room televisions. Sparking! ZERO embraces that imagination. Instead of telling fans to stop wondering… It invites them to wonder even more.
The game understands something important. Dragon Ball has always inspired conversation. Now it turns those conversations into gameplay.
Presentation — Technology Finally Caught Up

There was a time when Dragon Ball games asked players to use their imagination. Today, imagination isn’t necessary.
The animations flow naturally. The energy attacks explode across the battlefield. Characters move exactly as fans remember from the anime.
Every transformation carries weight. Every beam struggle feels dramatic.
It isn’t just impressive technology. It’s the culmination of decades of developers learning how Dragon Ball should look, sound, and feel in a player’s hands.
WHY IT MATTERS
Looking back over Dragon Ball Month, it’s remarkable to see how Dragon Ball gaming evolved. The earliest games searched for an identity. Budokai found one. Xenoverse preserved the legacy during a quieter chapter in the franchise’s history. Sparking! ZERO does something different.
It celebrates every step of that journey. It doesn’t ignore the past. It embraces it.
- Every character.
- Every saga.
- Every transformation.
- Every era.
It feels less like a single game and more like a thank-you letter to generations of Dragon Ball fans.
MODERN CONNECTION
The future of Dragon Ball gaming has never looked brighter.
Sparking! ZERO continues to expand with new content, while the next chapter is already taking shape with the announcement of a new Xenoverse adventure.
That should excite every Dragon Ball fan. Not because one game is replacing another. But because Dragon Ball gaming continues to evolve while honoring everything that came before.
It’s the same spirit that has carried the franchise for decades. One generation inspiring the next. One adventure leading to another.
QUESTION
When you look at Sparking! ZERO’s roster… Who’s the very first character you choose? The one you’ve been waiting years to play again.
A Final Thought

As Dragon Ball Month comes to a close, I find myself thinking less about games, tournaments, or power levels…and more about gratitude.
Thank you, Akira Toriyama.
Thank you to every editor, animator, writer, musician, voice actor, game developer, and artist who helped bring this incredible world to life over the past forty years.
Thank you to every studio that believed there were still stories worth telling.
Thank you to every developer who let us throw our first Kamehameha with a controller in our hands.
And thank you to the fans.
The ones who introduced Dragon Ball to a friend. The ones who debated power levels on the playground. The ones watching Toonami, or discovering it another way. The ones who kept collecting, replaying, rewatching, rereading, and sharing this incredible story with the next generation.
Most of all… Thank you to everyone who joined me throughout Dragon Ball Month.
Whether you read every article or simply stopped by for one, thank you for celebrating my favorite anime with me. It’s been an absolute joy to revisit these stories together.
The funny thing is, after spending a month thinking about Dragon Ball, I don’t think its greatest lesson was ever how to throw a Kamehameha. It was something Master Roshi taught before Goku and Krillin ever entered a World Martial Arts Tournament.
- Deliver the milk.
- Plow the fields.
- Study hard.
- Train harder.
- Be kind.
- Work for what you earn.
- Protect the people around you.
- Never stop learning.
The Turtle Hermit School was never really about martial arts. It was about becoming a better person. And in a strange way… Every one of us who grew up with Dragon Ball became students of that school.
Maybe we never wore the orange gi. Maybe we never learned to fly. Maybe we never gathered all seven Dragon Balls. But we learned perseverance. Humility. Friendship. Discipline.
The courage to get back up after being knocked down.
Master Roshi trained Goku. Goku inspired generations. And through them… He trained all of us.
So I guess that makes every Dragon Ball fan a graduate of the Turtle Hermit School.
Not because we’re the strongest. But because, like Goku, we’re still trying to become a little better than we were yesterday.
From the bottom of my heart… Thank you for taking this journey with me.
The Turtle Hermit School will be with us…Always.
